An Evolving Life. Purple Prayers

Purple Prayers

As we dive deep into the holiday season, celebrating has become more and more challenging this year.  With the number of COVID deaths becoming the equivalent of a 9/11 each day, how can we celebrate?

Yes, the vaccine has arrived! There is much cause for relief and hope. But with the “long, dark winter” at our doorstep, where do we find joy as we gaze into our computer screens and iPhones instead of into the faces of our friends and family whom many of us still can not see or touch.

Although I was raised in an observant household—Hebrew school twice a week, Sabbath services on Saturday morning, two sets of dishes, one for meat, one for dairy—I just recently learned how to pray. I could recite many of the prayers at the synagogue and sing the Passover and Hanukkah songs by heart at the table, but praying on my own did not occur to me.

So these days, I’ve been praying often. Yes, for the continued safety and health of my loved ones. But, also for a way to get through this winter as we wait for “normal” to return.  And when I look upwards for inspiration, I see the clouds, really see them, perhaps for the first time.

They have been remarkable, very dramatic these days, symbolic of the times. And what I have discovered is that along with the darkness there is so much light. To celebrate, here’s Purple Prayers. Happy Hanukkah!!
