For at least twenty years I’ve been visiting Sears Bellows County Park in Hampton Bays. First with Buddy, my golden retriever, and now with Copper who turned ten this year. Round and round the lake we’ve walked clocking miles and miles of exercise. A beagle/lab mix, he loves to romp in the woods hopping high over the brush.
In all those years, I’ve never noticed the yellow water lilies dotting the surface of the water at the end of May. I’d like to think that perhaps I’ve never frequented the park during this particular week before. But in all those years during one of the most splendid times of year, that’s doubtful.
What seems more likely, however, is that I just hadn’t noticed. Probably lost in thought about whatever I was working on or worried about, I had missed the moment when they rose above the surface and spread their blossoms. But this year, they caught my attention and spoke to me. We’re delighted to be here, they said.
And this time l heard them, I saw them. Because during this time of isolation, I’ve become very present. Not thinking about what happened yesterday or what’s going to happen tomorrow. I’m just delighted to be here and enjoy their company…
