An Evolving Life. Recovery

Recovery

Five weeks into isolation, I finally got back to my art work this week. So far, my immediate family has been extremely fortunate despite the fact that my husband is a physician who continues to see patients in his office.

As I face the day working at home as I normally do, my most noticeable symptom of isolation besides the loneliness, is that it’s been very difficult to concentrate, to stay on task each day while thousands die and millions mourn.

So when I finally stepped into the studio determined to finish a pastel I started in February, I rediscovered her. As I searched for the blue, green and gold pastels I had chosen weeks ago, I felt ambivalent. I was frightened yet, at the same time, somehow relieved by her presence.

Does she speak life or death? Is she in pain or in recovery? Her face is peaceful yet her limbs are drawn up into a fetal position. She could be suffering all alone or recovering in peace. Honestly, I’m not sure.

Ultimately, the interpretation lies with the spectator’s experience and point of view. So I decided to envelope her in a frothy blue and let her speak for herself—-even though I always pray for recovery....
