Stripped Down
Sometimes when I complete a piece of artwork whether it’s a photograph, a pastel, or a charcoal drawing, I have no idea what may have inspired the result. One of the mysteries and delights of art is that the best work rises from within when one stops thinking.
Here’s a sketch completed last week that moved me although I wasn’t sure why. Stepping forward completely comfortable in her bare skin, she’s determined yet weary.
But why I wanted to know? What injustice or hardship must she endure?
As I struggled to watch the impeachment trial this week, I found myself cursing at the television, outraged at the stripped down spectacle it has become. No witnesses. No documents. Nothing that resembles a true trial.
Then, I recalled this sketch. Suddenly, I recognized that this was not one woman’s singular plight, but a collective cry from those of us who are struggling to continue to believe that the truth matters and that somehow it will prevail.
Weary and disheartened, stripped of what we believe in, we must withstand the charade that is so blatantly challenging our democracy—-even though we are fully aware of its unfortunate outcome.
And as those in the Senate continue to cover-up for the insipid con man in the White House, we must soldier on determined to have faith in the process and hope for the change we keep praying for...
