It never ceases to amaze me how one’s creativity is so often emblematic of what’s happening on a grander scale. This month my focus shifted to the surfers skimming the waves at the beach where I’ve been painting most of the summer.
On the East End of Long Island, September is peak surfing season as hurricane swells migrate north and waters remain temperate. While many able bodies manage to catch a wave, few remain upright long enough to snap a compelling photograph from which I can work.
Here’s Surfer 1, the first in a series I’ve started where the surfer’s success translated into a new painting. That translation, however, is not just about rendering the body as it challenges the velocity of wind and water.
What came to mind after finishing this piece is how we are all surfing these days, riding the wave of what comes next. Since March, life has been uncertain and unpredictable. But so many of us have survived by staying calm, above water, and letting the flow of life take care of us…
