An Evolving Life. APART/TOGETHER
APART/TOGETHER
As the cold weather approaches, many of us here in New York are wondering what the winter will look and feel like. Will the infection rate creep back up keeping us indoors and isolated again like last spring? After a summer of painting, biking, and teaching yoga in the park, I’m trying to stay positive, hoping that more layers of clothing, more personal stamina, or maybe growing some more skin will keep me outdoors.
Ironically, as I fight these worries, part of my photo essay, APART/TOGETHER, has been included in the Photo Fringe 2020 Festival just launched online from Brighton, England. Last April, I was honored to join and meet with four talented photographers from New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Germany via a virtual workshop called FOR THE TIME, BEING conducted by Serge J-F. Levy of Tucson, Arizona. The theme of Serge’s workshop was “to use photography as a way of processing and responding to the pandemic.”
For my essay, I chose to photograph life with my husband, a primary care physician who has continued to see patients in his Westhampton, New York office throughout the pandemic. While he was actively engaged in a battle I couldn’t see, but could feel all around me, I explored how I was coping with near total isolation and difficulty focusing on my own creative work.
Moreover, I recorded how we were coping with the fear, both individually and as a couple. The fear that he could contract the virus at any time—he’s 67—as well as expose me—I’m 64. For months, I was afraid to go near his office. Here’s an image from the series, At Work 2020, taken from outside.
