For George
For fear of being exposed to the virus, I haven’t taken to the streets over the past few weeks as much as I’ve wanted to. Instead I’m expressing myself through this artistic tribute to George Floyd and the long line of African Americans who have been brutalized by the police and by racism.
Miraculously his murder has moved millions. And from the depths of despair, some hope for change is growing this spring regarding accountability for police violence, aggression and misconduct.
Even though I’m white, I relate to the problem as a woman. When I feel unsafe, harassed or mistreated, my last resort is to call the police for help. On a recent occasion when I did so, my complaint was disregarded and my fear treated with condescension not compassion—-making me feel more like the perpetrator than the victim. I shutter to think, therefore, of the terror People of Color experience when they or their children encounter law enforcement on the street or at their door.
Indeed not all policemen are “bad apples.” However, there is a white, male-dominated culture that runs rampant in our justice system and has been exacerbated by the current administration. It breaks my heart that such an unconscionable crime had to occur to expose the depth of racism in America and to move us forward toward reform and equality...
