Living with a health care worker has always been a challenge. Long hours alone on my own, weekends and holidays without my husband, not much vacation time for us together or with our children. And yes, there’s always the risk of contagion even in normal times.
As the wife “holding up the fort” behind a beloved country doctor—the kind we rarely encounter these days—I’m relieved to see that the world is finally appreciating the sacrifice health care workers and their families make each day. In the age of corporate managed care, when compensation is based on the number of patients seen on a daily basis and not on the quality of care, it’s rare that the public gets a real glimpse of what that sacrifice looks like.
So here’s an image, called Protected, taken outside his office door since I was afraid to enter and photograph him inside. It’s part of a photo essay in progress about our life together during these trying times.
