Cactus Flowers
In the midst of the pandemic when the world still feels frightening, frenetic and downright fruitless, there seems to be a shift taking place in our collective consciousness. Yes, there are some who are bored, chomping at the bit waiting to get back to Broadway, the bar, and the battlefield of life before the virus.
But others, many of my friends, seem to be getting back to basics, finding more serenity in their daily lives, and ultimately more satisfaction. Now there are no distractions, no excuse not to get and stay creative whether you enjoy cooking, writing or woodworking.
For me, one who has been turning inward for years, the lack of social activity has strengthened my priorities and helped me focus. Here’s another in my new series of watercolors with oil pastels celebrating the whimsy I have rediscovered here on the East End. For weeks, a friend and I have been painting by the shore in Hampton Bays.
In our temperate climate, it’s astonishing that each year around the beginning of July, lemony baskets of cactus flowers spread out on the south side of the Ponquogue Bridge. After living here for over thirty years, it’s as if I’m seeing them anew, or maybe for the first time...
