An Evolving Life. Tapper.

Tapper

Growing up in the fifties and sixties, women were sent direct messages to keep quiet. In many situations, I was afraid to speak up when I felt that an injustice was taking place especially at home where my father ruled. Children were to be seen, not heard. Women too.

Although I still get the “Shush” message on occasion from both men and women when I’m usually the first to speak up, I am no longer afraid. And this past Sunday while watching the Golden Globes, I was proud of all the women who used their prize moment to speak up about Climate Change and Women’s Rights.

I couldn’t help but cringe, however, when several of them did so wearing gowns designed explicitly to highlight their breasts, some exposing them to a degree that was ridiculous. How can we hear the strength of their words when our eyes were focused elsewhere?

Here’s Tapper from my Fountain Play Too series. Outfitted in pink, she’s feminine as can be. But she’s tapping out her message in silhouette. No distractions can be seen. We can’t help but hear her....
