Dune Magic

As we say goodbye to Summer this weekend, I find myself holding on. Energized by the chill in the air, I have been ironically drawn to the magic of the Dunes surrounding us here on the East End.

With my watercolors in hand, I’ve become enamored with their sumptuous display. First with Watch Hill on Fire Island displayed up top completed earlier this month. Then with Ponquogue below where I painted near the bridge this week.

Enveloped by the dunes for over 30 years, I wondered where this inspiration is suddenly coming from. Then I realized, Climate Change, of course. Acutely aware of the impending threat, that little by little these fortresses of sand are washing away, that these majestic locales could be underwater before we know it....

If you are equally concerned, there is a group called Drawdown—based on Paul Hawken's New York Times best seller Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming—that’s forming on the East End.

The next meeting is Monday, September 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton.
