An Evolving Life. A Valentine Surprise
A Valentine Surprise
In normal times, Valentine’s Day holds no actual place in my heart. To the contrary, it usually feels fake, manufactured for greeting card makers, florists, jewelers and chocolatiers. As one who worked part-time at a florist during high school, I recall it being the most lucrative flower day of the year after Mother’s Day.
Last week I experienced a different kind of Valentine. I had planned to spend an afternoon painting with one of my favorite artist friends at her home studio. Beforehand, I had decided to paint another array of clouds from a photograph. Upon my arrival, however, my friend surprised me. Pointing to her work table, she offered a bountiful array of tulips, spider mums and lilies as our shared subject.
Unexpectedly, the sight of such fresh color lifted my spirits and provided an infusion of joy that felt like a real Valentine. While many of us are still sheltering in place, waiting for our vaccines and for life to return to normal in the depth of this long winter, I hope this painting, Valentine Surprise, warms your heart the way this gesture from my friend warmed mine.
