An Evolving Life. Vaccine Envy

An Evolving Life. Vaccine Envy

Vaccine Envy

As a snowy February draws to a close here in New York, many of us are still wondering when we will get the vaccine. Those who have been eligible for weeks can’t get an appointment no matter how many times they call the toll-free number or scour the various websites.

Others, young and healthy, wonder how much longer they must wait to be eligible.

Adding to the frustration, it seems that we all have friends and family who already got the stick in the arm that most of us are longing for. And although it’s hard to admit, we feel envious.

Even though my husband is a physician who earned his place near the front of the line, it’s been hard not to be jealous. He could go out to dinner, to work, even to buy groceries with much less worry than me. Then when I did became eligible at the beginning of this month, the closest chance for an appointment I found was way upstate in Potsdam, hundreds of miles from my Long Island home.

So last week I simply surrendered. I decided to turn it over to the universe and try to let go of my vaccine envy. Instead of spending my free time pounding away at my keyboard looking for something that wasn’t available yet, I decided to paint and embrace what was actually outside my window. The result, Snow Day, in gouache and oil pastel is displayed here.

Then last Monday, out of the blue, I was offered an opportunity for an appointment and received my first dose a few days later. I still find it hard to believe that the universe actually responded.

If this story makes you feel envious, I completely understand. But I hope it makes you feel hopeful too...
