An Evolving Life. What Can I Do?

An Evolving Life. What Can I Do?

What Can I Do?

News last week that a dune 100 yards wide was swept away near the Shinnecock Inlet by big surf and strong winds set off alarms in my local community. Living just five miles from the area where my husband and I recently cycled, I spent the week wondering whether the 12-foot wall of sand that state and county workers erected immediately thereafter will hold up.

With another storm subsiding and winds blowing right outside my window as I write this piece, I’m afraid to find out. I’m also a bit spooked by this new image, Black Seas, taken last month at the start of hurricane season and as a new addition to my SPLASH series among three others that can be viewed on my website.

Although I’ve been quite concerned about Climate Change as I’ve expressed here before, I’m always surprised how the sub-conscious plays such a vital role in the creative process. Hopefully this event and others—like fires in California and the drought in the Southeast—will mobilize us all to work harder to mitigate the impact of Climate Change.

Despite the fact that we are mere individuals, I believe each one of us can utilize our unique talents to affect change. On my part, Black Seas will be the centerpiece of a solo exhibition that I was just offered at the Lyceum Gallery at Suffolk Community College sometime next year. The title so far is Hope Thru Change.

I hope this effort will inspire you to direct some of your special skills in that direction. Whatever your expertise, business, health, education, contracting, food service, etc., please ask yourselves: What Can I Do?
