New Beginnings & Cherished Memories

The fourth series in the Dusty Town sequence

Aunt Daisy Smiled Back. Episode 20

Jacob finished his breakfast at Betty Lou’s listening to the talk of days gone by. “You womenfolk sure can talk on so,” Jacob interrupted. “Thought we were gonna show the visitors around today. Time’s a wastin’ ladies.”

“Oh yes, we do so want to see the town!” Aunt Daisy said enthusiastically. The Morgan lady nodded in agreement. And off they all went.

Nelson’s general store and the newspaper were slated by Betty Lou and Jacob to be the main attraction and down the dusty road a wee tad from Betty Lou’s it was to be found. Even that short walk had turned their clothes a bit dusty, but the Morgan lady did not complain in the least, though she did wince from time to time in controlled horror. She had managed to abandon her city clothes for more comfortable choices which likely had saved the day.

There was Caleb sweeping away, like he had been doing every day for decades now. “Jacob dear, any chance of ever getting something other than dirt roads here? It will be the turn of the century soon after all.”

“I don’t know, Aunt Daisy. This is a dusty little town time has forgotten I s’pose. Railroad was comin’ through here once, would have modernized things I reckon.”

“Sometimes, modernizing isn’t the best thing,” Betty Lou added.

“Caleb!” Jacob called. “Want you to meet some nice folks staying for a while, we hope. This is Madeline’s Aunt Daisy from the city.”

“The one who wrote the letter, yes, pleased to meet you ma’am.”

“No need to be formal. Call me Daisy. May I call you Caleb?”

“Yes, yes, of course. Please do. Will you be staying long? This is a nice town, I’m sure you will like it and all of us I would hope too.”

“Well, I hope so too.” Aunt Daisy smiled at Caleb then and he smiled back.

“I hear the town is starting up a newspaper for the turn of the century. I did some writing myself back in the day.”

“Well, Miss Daisy, we can always use a good writer for our paper. Yes, we could, you know.” Caleb smiled at Aunt Daisy and Aunt Daisy smiled back.

“Caleb, this is our other visitor, Miss Morgan.”

“Pleased to meet you, Miss Morgan.”

“Pleased to meet you, Mr. Nelson.”

“Please call me Caleb, ma’am. And do you have a first name?”

“Yes I do, Caleb.”

And it seemed the longest time that Caleb stood in front of Miss Morgan waiting to learn her first name, but she evidently was done with what she had to say and she did not say another word. At last Caleb suggested, “Well, then, let’s see how our newspaper is progressing,” and they followed Caleb into his general store and the newspaper room.
