The fourth series in the Dusty Town sequence

Aunt Daisy Has Arrived. Episode 16

October 20, 1899

The warm weather continued the next day as Jacob, Betty Lou, and Willie arrived at the whistle stop with their wagon and waited for their guests to arrive.

“This is so exciting! To get to meet them!” Betty Lou was bursting with expectation. Jacob smiled and out of the corner of his eye, he saw the smoke from the coming train in the distance.

Willie saw it too. “Won’t be long now! Here she comes!”

As it came closer to the station, the clack, clack, clack on the tracks got louder and louder, smoke filled the sky almost obscuring the sun, the whistle sounded, and there it was! Jacob jumped down from the wagon to find Aunt Daisy and then he saw her, looking like she always had, like she had before her family had put her into a home. He knew then everything would be alright, no matter what the Morgan lady threw his way.

“Aunt Daisy!” Jacob called.

Aunt Daisy turned at his voice, and rushed to him, the Morgan lady in tow. “Jacob, I’m so glad to see you again!”

“No gladder than I am, Aunt Daisy!”

Betty Lou and Willie just stood there for a moment, waiting for Jacob to remember his manners. He did not in all the excitement and Betty Lou began, “Hello ma’am, I’m Betty Lou Stanton and I’m so pleased to meet you!”

“Betty Lou! I’ve heard so much about you from Jacob! And please, call me Daisy. And this handsome man must be my nephew Willie!”

“Aunt Daisy! You haven’t changed since I was a boy! So glad you came! My young’uns are fixin’ to run you ragged with fun and adventures!”

“That will bring joy to my heart, Willie dear, joy to my heart. I miss little ones around.”

And then Aunt Daisy remembered. “Oh my, my traveling companion! I thought she was right behind me!”

They turned to look toward the train but the Morgan lady was standing by their wagon, with many parcels and trunks and carrying bags piled up next to her. She was smiling at the conductor as he tipped his cap and went back inside the train. Her parasol was dusty, her good clothes were dusty, and she appeared quite disheveled. The good mannered city lady that she was, she managed to wave at them and smile broadly, but she was clearly taken aback by the whole scene.

“It hasn’t been quite what she imagined,” Aunt Daisy hinted, “but I think she will manage nicely nonetheless.”

“I’m sure she will. Reminds me of another city lady that landed here one day with two sweet little boys. She managed quite nicely herself. To that I can attest,” Betty Lou remembered. She, Jacob, and Willie smiled, as they all recalled the day Maddie and the boys came to Kansas to bring Jacob home, but they wound up making Kansas their home instead.
