New Beginnings & Cherished Memories
The fourth series in the Dusty Town sequence.
And the Morgan Lady. Episode 17
“Miss Morgan, so pleased to make your acquaintance once again,” Jacob addressed the Morgan lady, doing well to hide his terror and apprehension of perhaps becoming again the dreaded hunted husband material for her as he had been back in the city. This time though, she looked at him as if she had never met him before and had little desire to converse with him presently.
“I’m sorry sir. Have I met you before? This trip has just caused my head to swirl all topsy-turvy and I am a bit out of sorts at the moment. And why is it so dusty here? I’ve never quite seen anything like it. My clothes are ruined I suspect.”
And her look was one of such despair that Jacob could barely suppress his laughter. It surely was the product of much relief, but it was still laughter that was so close to spilling out. Fortunately, Betty Lou sensed what was coming and she jumped in to allow Jacob time to collect himself, or better yet, start helping Willie load the Morgan lady’s baggage into the wagon.
“Miss Morgan, so pleased to meet you! When we get into town, you can get all settled in and refreshed. It will all be fine, you’ll see.”
The Morgan lady looked at Betty Lou, managed to smile ever so slightly, when she politely said, “Pleased to meet you, Miss Stanton, I believe it is, right?”
“Yes, but please call me Betty Lou. And you, let’s not be formal. Do you have a first name?”
Again the Morgan lady stared at Betty Lou, smiled and said politely, “Oh yes! Doesn’t everyone!” And as the Morgan lady began to laugh, Betty Lou joined her. When the laughter stopped, Betty Lou asked, “And what is your first name?”
“Oh, you want to know what it is. You asked only if I had one. Rest assured I do,” and she politely smiled. A smile she had undoubtedly perfected over the years in her city circles.
“Oh, I see.” Betty Lou replied and smiled. “Well, perhaps one day you will tell us, if you’d like.”
“Yes, I might like that,” the Morgan lady replied, smiling. Fortunately, for both the Morgan lady and Betty Lou, Willie came along right about then.
“Miss Morgan, ma’am, I’m Willie. Nice to meet you. Your stuff’s all in the wagon and we’re about ready to head on home now. Aunt Daisy and Pa have been chatting in the wagon and we all can hop in now and make it to town right quick, if you’re ready we’re thinkin’.”
“Willie, is it you said your name was? Of course, I’m ready. I’d love to see a town for goodness’ sake, this dust is making me wheezy. How do you people live here?”
“Well ma’am, you know that’s just what my ma said when she came here. In fact, she was from the city too and was quite shocked to get off the stage, likin’ you probably are right now. But she not only chose to live here but actually liked it. So I reckon you can too. It grows on you, it does. No hustle and bustle, like you’re used to, but a whole lot of people that stick together and face life together. It’s a good place, you’ll see, if you give it a chance.”
“Here, help me, young man. My feet are used to city streets and I can’t walk so well here in these shoes.”
“Well, sure ma’am, it’s just a short way to the wagon, but I reckon I’ll help you if you’re needin’ it.”
“Thank you young man, that’s very sweet of you. And you gave quite a chamber of commerce speech, kudos. I’ll give it a try, but I doubt this place could ever grow on me.”
