The fourth series in the Dusty Town sequence

The Morgan Lady CAN Cook. Episode 19

October 21, 1899

We all piled into the wagon and went into town for supper last night at Betty Lou’s. She went all out for her guests, Aunt Daisy and the Morgan lady, and they felt at home. Betty Lou had set up separate rooms for each of them so they would have some space and a spot of their own in the house for as long as they want to stay. Betty Lou is grateful for the company and I do believe she is planning for the both of them to stay forever! I know the young’uns want them to stay forever too!

Can’t write too much this morning as I promised I would get to town early for Betty Lou and me to show the visitors around. We thought they would enjoy hearing about the newspaper and seeing our progress for starters.

Betty Lou answered her door on the first knock and the smell from the kitchen was absolutely scrumptious. “Jacob, come in, we’re just finishing up breakfast. Did you eat?”

“Yes, I mean, no. I mean yes, but everything smells so good if you have extra I’d love to have some!”

Betty Lou laughed and to the kitchen they went. Aunt Daisy and the Morgan lady looked quite happy amid bacon and biscuits and other delightful goodies and welcomed Jacob, each offering him a chair next to them. He quickly pulled up a chair and sat between them as Betty Lou set a heaping plate in front of him and he dug in unashamedly. “Love your cookin’ Betty Lou, love your cookin’!”

The three ladies began to laugh, as Betty Lou responded, “Jacob, Miss Morgan cooked breakfast today.”

Jacob turned in disbelief to look at the smiling Miss Morgan. “Miss Morgan, this is quite delicious. But where did you learn to cook country breakfasts so good?”

“Oh, I am so glad you like it! Well, when I knew I was coming here I thought I would learn how and I attended a cooking school where I could work with a chef from some southern Midwestern small town somewhere.”

“Well, my, my, my! I learned to cook from the person my husband Jason hired to teach me. We have something in common, Miss Morgan. How nice!” Betty Lou was genuinely happy.

“That is so interesting, Betty Lou,” Miss Morgan said and she was genuinely happy to have something in common with people she hardly would imagine she could. “I’d love to hear about Jason. My husband died in a boating accident and I daresay I’ve never quite been the same.”

Betty Lou smiled. “Jason died in the war, at Gettysburg, so many years ago. And yet, sometimes I catch myself looking out the window and down the road, half expecting to see him coming home.”
