Sometimes Dreams Do Come True. Episode 10
September 10, 1899
We have begun work on our newspaper. Caleb believes we should have something to show for our work by the turn of the century already just a few months away. He also believed and convinced me that the townsfolk would enjoy reading about the generations of our family as our family is tied in so much with their own families and this town. The townsfolk have contributed articles and things like favorite quotes and Betty Lou has even decided to divulge a recipe or two after all these years!
I am most happy that Maddie’s dream will come true although she is not here to see it. I remember Betty Lou would tell me in the beginning, after Maddie died, that time would be a healer of sorts but that I would always remember how it was before she died. Yet not think so much sadly about it, but would smile when I thought about her. Truth be told, I guess I am still sad and I reckon I always will be. Betty Lou was right though about the smiling. I do smile very much when I think about Maddie. I hope somehow I’ve made her proud despite never having been good enough for her in so many ways.
“We got so much accomplished today on the paper, didn’t we Jacob!” Betty Lou remarked as they were closing up their back room newspaper office in Nelson’s store. “I’ve plumb wore out myself!”
“It’s sure comin’ along,” Jacob answered. “I’m glad for you, and Maddie. It was your dream and now it’s coming true.”
They walked quietly down that dusty town road and found themselves deep in thought of those yesterdays long past, the times behind them out of reach, and the people of those days now gone.
“It’s alright you know Jacob.” Betty Lou broke the silence.
“What is Betty Lou?”
“Your missin’ Maddie.”
“I know. She’s everywhere here Betty Lou, just everywhere.”
“I know, but that’s alright. You ain’t ever gonna forget her anyway.”
At that, Jacob smiled at Betty Lou and she smiled back. And somehow, it was alright.
