New Beginnings & Cherished Memories

The fourth series in the Dusty Town sequence

Episode 14

October 18, 1899

Aunt Daisy will be here in two days! Her letter came today in answer to mine suggesting she come before winter set in and then she would just have to stay with us until spring. She is so happy to be able to spend the turn of the century with us and we are glad too. Aunt Daisy will like it here and I suppose the Morgan lady will get used to things like Maddie did. The little ones are so excited! They all want to give up their rooms for the visitors. Sue tells them we will see. Truth of the matter is, Betty Lou has plenty of room and they will stay with her, when the little ones aren’t sharing them of course.

Caleb brought Aunt Daisy’s letter to Jacob around lunchtime. He didn’t stay long, but he was curious about the woman’s handwriting that was on the envelope.

“I thought I’d come deliver this to you rather than have you wait to get it. Seems kinda important, hmm?” Caleb raised his eyebrow in expectation.

Jacob glanced at the envelope. “It’s from Aunt Daisy, Caleb! I hope she’ll be coming!”

“Aunt Daisy?” Caleb inquired, somewhat less interested now that the woman appeared to be a relative.

“Maddie’s aunt, who was so kind to me during the time I was in the city. Oh, and her traveling companion is a reformed husband hunter turned traveler. We call her the Morgan lady, don’t reckon I know if she has a first name.”

“Well, well, that’s, interesting. Yes, interesting.” His curiosity apparently more than satisfied, Caleb mentioned something about having to get back to town. “See you soon, Jacob,” and off he went.

Jacob sat down at the kitchen table to start on the lunch Sue had sent over before it got cold. Fried chicken and biscuits with gravy! One of his favorites! He opened Aunt Daisy’s letter and began to read while he scoffed down the delicious meal.

My Dear Jacob,

Miss Morgan has taken care of all the travel details. She says I had to do such things for so long that now I should have them done for me. We arrive by railroad on the morning of October the 20th. Miss Morgan insists on packing heavily for country living, as she put it, so be prepared. She says she doesn’t remember you, and I suppose starting fresh is always best anyway. I am so excited and happy! We will be together for the turn of the century! And little children again to love and play with! I am thankful for your kindness toward me. I can’t wait to get there!

Love to all,

Aunt Daisy

“I hope she will like it here,” Jacob said out loud as he closed the letter and finished lunch. “I do so want her to stay.” Then he thought of the Morgan lady coming too, and truly hoped her husband hunting days were over.
