New Beginnings & Cherished Memories

The fourth series in the Dusty Town sequence

Every Now and Then. Episode 15

October 19, 1899

Tomorrow is the big day! Aunt Daisy, and the Morgan lady, oh my!, will be here for a long visit. So much hustle and bustle today. Betty Lou wanted to know everything I knew about Aunt Daisy so she could make her feel at home right away and do everything she could to make her feel how happy we all were that she was able to, and chose to, come see us. It’s funny, I don’t know much about Maddie’s Aunt Daisy, as she was always so much about doing for others and very rarely for what she wanted or hoped for or dreamed about. I hope Aunt Daisy and Betty Lou become friends. Maddie’s being gone has left a hole in Betty Lou’s life, they were dearest friends through a lot for forever it seems, now, looking back.

Aunt Daisy’s kindness will bring a smile to all of our faces every day that she is here and perhaps we can make her smile too. Betty Lou has already instructed me to make sure she is not put upon in any way and allowed to fall into her old role of left out and left home to take care of things others should be doing exceptin’ they are off gallivanting and leaving things to her to handle in their absence. Remember, Betty Lou told me, she is a member of the family and our guest and she will be treated extra special. Betty Lou needn’t worry. Aunt Daisy was my only friend when I was left to the devices of the Darwintons back in the city and I will be forever grateful. She helped me through it when Maddie was no longer there to do so, and she didn’t even have to.

Maddie! My dear Maddie! I still miss you so much! It’s hard to believe she’s been gone ten years this past summer. Seems like yesterday, sometimes, we were sitting on the front porch after supper, enjoying each other’s company and all that was Kansas in the early evening time. Betty Lou had said as the years go by I would still miss Maddie but I would be able to smile at all the good times we had as a family and all we had been through together. I miss her most at front porch time, when the sun is setting just that perfect way, all the pretty colors against the Kansas blue sky, and Maddie would smile and look at me and we would know we had found the best place in the entire world to be. It was forever and that we knew beyond a doubt.

Jacob put down his journal and he did smile, remembering, once again like Betty Lou said. But as the light and surprisingly warm fall breeze of twilight in rural Kansas brushed across his face, tears touched his face also. Like they still did, every now and then.
