An Evolving Life. Black Magic

Black Magic

Let me start by saying that I’m not a cat lover. While I connect heart and soul to most dogs and they to me, cats scare me. That is unless they act like dogs; it’s rare, but it does happen.

Over the years, this aversion to the feline has been compounded by my neighbors who have been feeding feral cats just behind my fence, accumulating about 30 in their yard at one point. While the number has diminished lately, they continue to be a menace by spraying my plants, pooping in my yard, and generally bullying me with their presence.

When my beloved Copper, a beagle/lab mix, was here, he was a great deterrent. Perched on the window seat, he handled the situation by barking with fury whenever they passed by and were about to do their business.

Since he left us in May, however, the cats have been appearing more frequently. So my husband has assumed the responsibility. However, I much prefer Copper’s howling rather than his human obscenities. And, something unexpected, spooky and quite magical has also been taking place.

Each evening around 4 or 5 p.m., a black cat appears at the back of my property just in front of the Green Giants that serve as a hedge, He/she (not sure), then crouches down in the grass and stares intently at the house.

Wherever I am, in my studio, my office, the kitchen, even the laundry room, I sense his/her presence. And I start to cry. Because that’s where Copper chose to lie down during his last days—-when he was in pain; when he was hiding, refusing to come inside; when he was trying to tell us it was time to go, time to return to nature.

So what does it all mean? I cried, asking some friends, both who love cats and dogs, whom I encountered on my evening walk last week. A daily walk I must now take without Copper.

It’s healing, one said.
Healing how? I asked. I do know it’s some kind of black angel sent from Copper.
Yes,
the other woman said. It wants to make sure that you are okay.
