Forget me not
Pink belly imprinted with spots
Like a cow rolled over stretching
Always ready to be rubbed
Hearts etched into fur where white meets
Copper at the crown of his head
In waves down his back
As pads protecting paws
Paws patter down the steps
Walk around and around the block
Trot beside me on the bike
Gallop up and down the hill
Black nose points upward howling
Off-key with me and the harmonica
Or at the cat about to poop in the yard
Then presses gently against his bowl
Limbs fold comfortably in any position
Monitoring the neighborhood
Dozing in the chair
Basking in the sun
Goofy smile for those he adores
Greeting children, friends, neighbors
Who gravitate to his sweet soul
Or with a speedy wag at the very tip
Ears shaped like diamonds
Soft and smooth as velvet
That I continue to stroke
Even in my sleep
Big brown eyes that blink
I love you too
