Gallery Notes. Curated by Alex Ferrone.

Now that New York is opening again, art galleries, especially ours, will appreciate your support by visiting, leaving a comment for exhibiting artists in the guest book, and talking us up to your friends.  Of course, should you find a wonderful connection with any of the artworks, we’re here to assist you in bringing it home.

Reasons to Visit Art Galleries: Inspiration

Visiting art galleries and delving into the creations of artists can be inspiring.  Each artist began with a spark of an idea that grew in complexity into a completed work of art.  When visiting an art gallery, you can get a better understanding of an artist’s process and inspiration for their works by speaking with the Director or the Curator.

Listening about the creation process of others can be motivating and may even compel us to take our own actions.  Whether it’s to create on our own or enhance our own artistic skills, to solve a problem with different approaches, to find strength to face a nagging issue; or, to relieve stress and feel more at peace, to feel different emotions, or even to share what you learned with someone else – visiting an art gallery can inspire our next actions.

Please do visit in person and get inspired!

Winn Rea, 2016, “Topo Shift: Ausable Lakes 1”

Inspired by her longstanding identification with the natural world, artist Winn Rea’s process-based art addresses environmental themes in wall reliefs, works on paper, ephemeral sculpture and video installation.  She sees herself not as separate from nature, but as abiding in its flow.

Her new “Inner Topography” series from 2020 continues to explore the layered topographical form as seen in her earlier works (see image above). What sets these works apart is that the layers are not derived from USGS data of physically existing land forms, but from the figures found in the top layer of Russian Birch Ply revealing the inner growth of the tree.  When combined with color relationships the work becomes a metaphor for the inward search for peace and stability (see images below).

Alex's next several posts will focus on the reasons (and joys) of experiencing the art gallery.

Visit Alex Ferrone Gallery in person to view these inspiring works by Winn Rea and other artists.
