Fog

July 15, 2021

Dear Dad,

I read that artist Henri Matisse said, “Derive happiness in oneself from a good day’s work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us.” Pretty sure I have been doing that for many years now.

This one particular day almost ten years ago, I was hired to photograph a property in East Hampton.  The weather was slightly overcast and we were flying along the shoreline out to the Hamptons. Approaching the Hamptons, we watched a fog rolling in very quickly off the ocean.  It was a bit scary, and we had to stop the assignment mid-flight and turn back for the airport.  However, I asked the pilot to remain in the area for just a few more moments, and I was able to capture this image.  I believe the fog worked very well here and added a beautiful layer to this photograph.

So, I’m sure you will tell me there’s some kind of a lesson here.  I’m thinking, “Foggy moments can shift a situation; however, how you work it can really make the difference in the outcome.”

Thinking of you during these odd, somewhat foggy days,

Alex
