Stomping Grounds

Not exactly my main stomping grounds, I did spend much time in Brooklyn through childhood and up visiting my Grandmother who lived in Williamsburg. The area was so different when I was a kid and my siblings and I enjoyed playing in the street and around the neighborhood and loved her house with the big stoop in front from which to sit and watch the passersby.

As we know, Brooklyn is a completely different world now - one filled with creatives and art venues everywhere - and this weekend, it brings one of our artists, who grew up there, full circle. Now residing in Oceanside on Long Island, Felix Burgos recently debuted a series of paintings in our last exhibition, “Urbanesque II, NYC,” and will be presenting some of those and new works at The Other Art Fair Brooklyn Edition this weekend.

Here are a few highlights.

Cross Walk, by Felix Burgos (NY)

Felix states about his work, “I grew up in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn in the ‘70s and like many kids, became very resourceful to occupy our time. Scooters were created from wooden milk crates, 2x4 wood boards, and metal roller skate parts. A broomstick made a bat and was used for stickball in the street instead of baseball on a field. We jumped rope using a simple clothesline - add one more clothesline and Double Dutch was no problem.”

Felix continues, “With so much going on around us now, sometimes we just need to step back to calm. My art sets out to capture that same feeling of simplicity. It’s just you, enjoying that moment with no distractions from the outside world.”
