The Dalai Lama’s Cat, by David Michie.

Sometimes when the world is too much for me (which, lately, seems to be all the time) I cannot bear to read one more “serious” book. And that’s what brought me to The Dalai Lama’s Cat.

The Dalai Lama is my hero. And I am addicted to cats. Imagine a ragged, at the edge kitten, abandoned, smeared with mud, and a Himalayan* kitten to boot,  rescued by one of the Dalai Lama’s aides and through a series of small steps becomes the Dalai Lama’s cat. His beloved, lap-sitting and observant cat.

The story unfolds through the voice of the cat (Himalayans are extremely vocal, by the way) as she becomes a member of the household and a part of its comings and goings. Let me add, this is an extremely opinionated cat with a noble point of view. And so, through the cat of many names,  we follow the Dalai Lama through his days and nights, learning more about him and his ways. The cat is an excellent teller of tales and a sharp observer.

And if you want to learn more, I encourage you to read the book. It had me smiling from cover to cover, sometimes laughing out loud, and if I could meow, I would.

*I’ve been fortunate in that two Himalayan kittens came to live with me. They’re an incredible breed, absolutely gorgeous, brilliant, and extremely affectionate.  Mine (Rama and Krishna) grew into older age with me, and they are forever a part of my own history.
