Just Folks. Native American.

Native American

As we begin our official “final” weekend of the summer, I offer up this homage to the Shinnecock Indian Powwow with all of its power, mysticism and ceremony.

Each Labor Day Weekend, we've looked forward to attending this National Native American Festival. Held in Southampton, the Shinnecock Indian Powwow is one of the largest such gatherings held annually on the east coast. Native American Powwows are held on Labor Day Weekend across the country as Indian nations gather to celebrate tradition, culture, food and compete in Native dancing. We enjoy Indian Fry Bread, while feeling comforted by the smell of roasted corn and white sage burning in the air. It seems "otherworldly" and truly feels like the advent of Fall. Like so many things this summer, it won't be happening. For the first time in 74 years, a smaller version will be held, but not open to the public. For this I am sad. We will miss many things, not least of which is a friend we made over the years, a vendor named George, from the Narragansett Tribe in Rhode Island. We will be sure to look for him next year.

Maybe this year, we will draw on the traditions we have enjoyed every Labor Day and will celebrate the transition of summer into fall on Sept 21, with our own adapted ceremony.

Happy Labor Day Weekend Everyone!!
