Just Folks. Carnival.

Just Folks. Carnival.

Carnival Means Summer.

Like everyone these days, I'm longing for many of the perennial events that are non-existent this summer...like the Carnival. Yes!

Well today, July 31st, is National Cotton Candy Day, which causes me to lament about what used to be. Rolling up to the carnival on a hot July evening was always exciting, seeing the psychedelic glow of the lit-up attractions, appearing like a mirage upon a field that was vacant just a few days before. I can remember the cheap sweet smells of hot caramel popcorn and cotton candy that lingered in the warm air upon our arrival. Hangin' out with adult friends (50+) and their children, we'd ride repeatedly on the Pharaoh's Fury, the Zipper and the Sizzler wearing our ticket bracelets. Straying from the group at times, I loved walking around to take in the sights and sounds on my own for inspiration. I'd often seek out the lone tattooed vendor frying up Zeppoles from his nomadic trailer. I loved hearing the misfit barkers who'd call out soliciting anyone to play their seemingly rigged games, while visually seducing you with their strings of plush toy trophies. "Win a prize, any size!" To me, it's just one of those quintessential summer experiences that never gets old....and I truly miss it.
