A Very Different Thanksgiving

Every year, come rain or come shine (and for some inexplicable reason it mostly rains) people happily gather to celebrate and share Thanksgiving. And if they’re not happy about it, they still show up smiling, it’s the rule.

This year, for my family and other families, Thanksgiving will be different.
Here and around the world, there is an uninvited guest waiting, a deadly virus named COVID-19. We all know about it, we know what it does and how it spreads.
And we’ve had to make hard decisions.

So my family, all on the same page, decided that we won’t get together this year.
Some people made a different decision, they’re flying home or traveling to other places to gather.

And while I don’t see myself as a particularly cautious person (I cross at red lights, forget to lock the door, have made terrible furniture decisions and disastrous decisions about men) this Thanksgiving I surprised myself. I needed to feel that my family was as safe as is possible, each in their own homes, me in mine, because in the end, we don’t want an end.

We want next Thanksgiving - with all the goodies that come with it - good food, excellent wine, much laughter and joy, some light-hearted teasing and of course, dessert!

A very different Thanksgiving this year - some of us together, some apart.
My wish is for us all to be safe, to be healthy and to enjoy this holiday in whatever way works best.
And may blessings be upon us.
