Through the Looking Glass

Through the Looking Glass

Editors Note: You know those conversations you have with yourself… in your head? The ones that are super intelligent, touch upon the human condition, frailties and the like. Many times, there is even an “ah-ha!” moment involved. Well, let me tell you, Lynda Bernard is a master of this genre—that we just made a Hummingbird genre, that is. Somehow, for Lynda, that initial thought “morphs” into something more… as you will see.

Introducing Through the Looking Glass, a new Hummingbird series by Lynda Bernard. Connected and unconnected, each piece will stand on its own, be thoughtful and thought-provoking. We promise!

SANTA ISN’T COMING. HE’S ALREADY HERE.

I’m a holiday kind of gal - I love Thanksgiving, I adore Christmas. Each of these holidays bring something special and they force us to slow down, spend time with family and friends, maybe even silence the iPhone (gasp). Leaving it at home - out of the question and I understand. I don’t leave mine at home.

But here’s what’s driving me crazy. We don’t even get to Thanksgiving and the stores are already filled with Christmas - cards, decorations, candy, ugly Christmas sweaters, gifts of all kinds. It’s Christmas, too soon, too soon. The holiday is over a month away - and it’s been looking like Christmas since before Thanksgiving.

Yesterday I went into CVS (enough of a traumatic experience in itself) and bumped into a stand-up Santa Claus that was about as tall as I am. Santa? Why not a turkey? Or a Pilgrim?

There’s something obscene about using Christmas to overshadow Thanksgiving. I understand there’s nothing really marketable about Thanksgiving and that there’s not much profit margin in turkeys and cranberries and sweet potatoes, so businesses need to get people spending as soon as possible.

Personally, I find it repulsive (sorry my advertising friends). November just doesn’t do it for me. It feels forced, it feels like it’s corrupting the magic and beauty of Christmas. How excited can I get when I see Christmas decorations up right after Halloween. I feel resentful - because magic doesn’t last forever and I want my holiday magic at the beginning of December.

Amen.
