An Evolving Life. Resolved.
Resolved
At year’s end, I find myself thinking about the word ‘resolved.’ It’s often used by artists when they feel that their work is fully developed and ready to show. It’s tricky since it’s often difficult to know when artwork is finished.
I also can’t help but notice how resolve is connected to resolution. Those pesky intentions we concoct at the beginning of each year to challenge and drive ourselves crazy about how we must improve ourselves and our lives.
Well this month I tackled a project I had been dreading all through 2018 and hoped to resolve by the end of the year—updating my website, making it mobile responsive—ughhh. At the start of December I decided it was now or never, that I needed to put aside my artwork and dedicate the month to redesigning and launching it by the New Year.
Aside from choosing and learning the template and software on Squarespace, I needed to figure out how to integrate my figurative artwork with my photography on one site. Well several days ahead of schedule, its been resolved and I’m pleased to invite you to take a look. (Click here.)
To celebrate, I’ve chosen Lightning (below) from SPLASH to represent the bolt of energy I needed to get activated, but also all the technological chaos I had to wrestle with. Multiple pages open and layered on my desktop, lengthy support chats and hours of circuitous phone calls; sometimes all occurring at once.
Ironically, as I write this virtual column on the Notes of my iPhone, which will be emailed to the editor, and then proliferated to your many devices, I must admit that technology conflicts with my nature.
Despite the great sense of accomplishment I have from creating the site and facing my tech fears, I would have much rather been outside freezing, roaming with my camera or working at my easel covered in pastel dust. I guess that’s something I need to resolve, perhaps in 2019.... perhaps not?

I have had the good fortune of knowing Meryl Spiegel for many years. We met during my BNB days when she was referred to me as a resource for a specific type of photography I was searching for. I also knew her as a writer. Over the years, I have been impressed with Meryl’s talent and creativity, and the honesty of her work. When Meryl began to sketch, paint, work with pastels, she truly overlaid one talent on top of another. The layers were intriguing. I reached out to Meryl recently because I thought that the Hummingbird audience would appreciate her work, and value her process. They say that timing is everything, and in this case it was, because Meryl was thinking about not only “showing” her work, but writing about it too. In our new series, An Evolving Life, Meryl will share the stages, challenges, and meaning of her art, and the journey that coincides with the pieces she highlights. Sandra Novick
