Demon Copperhead

Barbara Kingsolver

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver is the story of a teenage boy growing up in present day Appalachia. The story is based in large part on the novel David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. The raw physical beauty of the Appalachia Region is in sharp contrast to the impoverished conditions which exist for Demon and those who live there. In Dickensian fashion, opioid addiction, a failed school system, and dysfunctional child protection services are rampant. All the while Kingsolver’s writing is concise, and her language and character development are wonderfully entertaining. A great read.
