Marmalade

An emotional and intuitive shift

Marmalade still remains one of my favorite images to date because it represents an important pivotal point of transition in my illustration style. I created this sketch in May of 2020 just as “the world” was beginning to open up again after the Pandemic. Looking in my pantry for inspiration (remember how commonplace that was?) I found a jar of Bonne Maman Orange Marmalade and then next, I remember painting it very quickly without a pencil drawing first. And while battling my impatience for things to dry completely, I discovered the beautiful effects of working “wet on wet” with watercolor and black ink as these materials began to bleed and blend spontaneously. To my joy,  instant luminosity occurred and merged into the jam itself.  I was in the flow!

What I recognize now  in hindsight is that at that time I too was beginning to “open up,” as I was breaking away from a pre-existing monochromatic line style that was colored in with flat watercolor and then without deliberation, moving into a more impressionistic approach. It was an emotional and intuitive shift. Since that shift, I continue to be awed by the luminosity and nature of watercolor, and its effectiveness in conveying emotional and physical properties of food, florals and beverage themed subjects and I have made it my own. Though the  artistic process continues to be a bittersweet journey with some failures and continued learning, it is one that is never short on rewards.
