Episode 13

“Hey Bailey!”

 “Sheriff, good to see ya! What’s going on?”

 “This Three Mile Road house fire is getting to be quite an interesting story, might have been an intruder that night.”

 “Really Sheriff!”

 “There was an open side window, looks like the screen was lifted, you can see handprints on the outside of it if you look just right. Could have been pushed up from the outside that night. The curtain seems to have disappeared, out with the debris I’m told. I’m wondering if perhaps the intruder took it with him, maybe something incriminating was on it, or could have been.”

 Bailey just looked at Taylor for a moment and then responded, “Sheriff, cut the people here some slack. This isn’t back east you know. Things are a lot tamer here.”

 “Maybe so, Bailey, but I know what I see, I’ve been doing this a lot of years. You from back east too?”

 “Actually, yes, it’s been a long time, lifetime ago it seems now.”

 Taylor took out Merton’s old faded photograph and showed it to Bailey. “Did Merton ever show you this?”

 “He did actually. She was his wife, killed, an accident, about 40 years ago. He went free you know, the driver who killed his wife, he spent many years looking for him to get his revenge. When his wife died, a part of him died too.”

 “Why didn’t you tell me these things the other day?”

 “You didn’t ask Sheriff, you didn’t ask.”
