Episode 9

When Taylor knocked on Mrs. Greenfield’s door, she opened the door immediately. “Hi Sheriff, please come in.”

“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Greenfield. My clerk told me you wanted to speak with me?”

“Yes Sheriff, the clerk asked about Mr. Merton. I used to look in on him every day, well mostly every day. And I suppose he told me more things than he would someone else, my having been a pastor’s wife and all.”

“Yes, perhaps he would Mrs. Greenfield. What do you know about him? Who he was? Where he came from?”

“Well, I think he was a very rich man, though you would never know it. He made his money in investment banking he had told me, back east somewhere, not here. Was married, wife was killed in an accident, no children. Seemed his wife’s death left him bitter and vengeful. It frightened me sometimes.

“He always felt somebody was watching him, going to come after him, it was the strangest thing. Gave me the heebie-jeebies. He insisted I take his laptop computer, his paperwork files for safekeeping. If he had a cell phone he probably would have given it to me too.”

“May I see the items he gave you?”

“I have them right here for you Sheriff, thought you might want to take a look-see.”

“Thank you ma’am. Let me borrow these for a bit.”

“You can have them Sheriff, I don’t want them hanging around, to be honest. Merton was a very strange man, lonely, bitter and hiding some things too, seemed to me anyway.”

“Merton wasn’t his real name. Did he tell you that?”

“Oh my, no, he didn’t tell me Sheriff.”

“Much obliged to you Mrs. Greenfield. I may be back if that would be alright.”

“Sure Sheriff, if you think I can help, of course.”

With Merton’s laptop and paper documents under his arm, Taylor’s dead ends were beginning to take on some life.
