A Rainy Sunday Afternoon on the North Fork

the New York Times Recommends a visit to the Alex Ferrone Gallery

On Friday, the NYT published 36 Hours, North Fork, Long Island. They recommend pairing wine with art for an afternoon, and in addition to the wineries mentioned, they suggest visitors make sure to experience the changing exhibits at the Alex Ferrone Gallery.

We, at Hummingbird, do too!! Here are a few reasons why. Alex Ferrone has been a supporter of local artists for many years, including the last 11, since she founded the Alex Ferrone Gallery (AFG). Initially the Gallery focused on fine art, contemporary photography, however in recent years the scope has been expanded to include paintings and works in other media as well. While the mainstay of artwork represented is created by artists that work locally, several exhibitions have encouraged entries and featured artists from across the country and around the globe. Exhibitions are juried by well-known and respected gallery owners, art historians, art critics and other prestigious names in the art world. When you visit, you will be amazed at the quality and creativity of the work, and the Gallery in general. I should mention that the AFG maintains an ongoing educational program that features artist receptions, workshops, and other lecture series.

But there is another big reason to make a visit to the Alex Ferrone Gallery a priority. That is because Alex Ferrone came to the East End with a dream to create a space for mid-career artists to flourish and gain exposure. A place that was worthy of the artists and work represented there. She established requirements and procedures for entry to exhibits. As a fine art photographer, she of course wanted a beautiful space to exhibit her own work. It's often been a challenging road to hoe. The North Fork has evolved over the years with a greater number of visitors and residents that show a broader appreciation for Alex's vision. So now you have the opportunity to participate, to meet the artists, to see new work--maybe even add to or begin your collection, to learn from each other. It's not often that we get to support someone within our own community that stayed true to her vision and lucky for us... it appears that her dream is coming true.

Here is the link to the NYT 36 Hours. It doesn't have to be today-- but we encourage you to check out the Alex Ferrone Gallery soon.

In the spirit of full disclosure, Alex Ferrone is a contributor and good friend of Hummingbird. Of course she is.
