Starr Boggs.

Located in Westhampton Beach, admittedly Starr Boggs it is not on the North Fork.  HOWEVER, we do make exceptions for restaurants that are nearby that we think are great—and it took us only 40 minutes to get there from Southold, and of course it’s even shorter the further west you start out.

That said, you know it has to be fabulous if we are featuring it on Hummingbird, and indeed it is.  This is the third time we’ve been there within a year’s time.  The food is fantastic, presentation of plates beautiful and creative, the drinks divine, and the service was top notch.

When we ate there last, one in our party had the crab cake appetizer.  He comes from Maryland, and his mother made the best crab cakes I’ve ever had.  It’s a time consuming process with refrigeration between steps and a béchamel base.  Of course, crab meat has to be Maryland Jumbo Lump, and the bread crumbs home made.  These were rated, “better than my Mom’s.”  Words never before uttered.  I had a butter lettuce salad with blue cheese, candied walnuts, skinny slices of apples (match stick), and a champagne vinaigrette.  It was plated semi-deconstructed and was very pretty, and it was nice to toss the ingredients together.  It was delicious.  Entrees, which were both excellent, included almond crusted flounder in a beurre blanc sauce, and a curry baked halibut.  Both came with beautiful seasonal vegetables.

But I should have started with the cocktails.  Martini, extra dry with three olives, check.  And my new favorite, a Lemon Drop, which I believe is made with the vodka of your choice and lemon liqueur, pictured below.  Delicious, refreshing and the perfect summer drink.

Starr Boggs is highly recommended.  They have a prix fixe on certain nights, which is a great value, but for the quality of the dinner we had coupled with the dining experience, we found the a la carte prices moderate, and well worth it.

As a side note, Westhampton Beach has its own vibe, and truth be told, the people watching added to the experience.  There was a great cast of characters, many of whom appeared to be high maintenance.  One woman held an ice pack on her forehead for the entire meal.  Strong opinions and lots of big blond hair abounded.  The restaurant was full, with tables turning over and refilled promptly. It was a wonderful escape from the ordinary and all the news of the day.

I plan to go back again soon.
