Just Folks. National Coffee Day & BIG NEWS!

Just Folks. National Coffee Day & BIG NEWS!

Editor's Note:

Tina Folks and I have crossed paths many times over the past decade. We began to get to know each other when we both served on the Board of East End Arts.

In 2016, when my idea of a blog was solidifying and I began reaching out to writers, artists, and others with diverse and exciting interests, I happened to see Tina's new work, mainly pencil drawings, sketches, and pen and ink, with color introduced through vibrant water colors. They were irresistible as they came together in the most whimsical way. The work focused on everyday “things,” running the gamut from pie to artist’s tools, and resonated as they communicated the beauty and joy in everyday life. I knew Tina had to be part of Hummingbird... and of course, happily, she said yes.

Tina was a steady contributor and her pieces lent themselves so well to a series. Given the subject matter and perspective, I had this idea to name it "Just Folks," using the double entendre of Tina's name along with the everyday topicality. And here we are, 7 years later, and Tina is opening the Just Folks Store. I couldn't be more proud of this association, and for Hummingbird to have been the platform where Tina could flex the "Just Folks" muscle, taking it off to an additional direction. It's so exciting! Tina reports that the Just Folks Store, launched today, is a work in progress and new Just Folks items will be added regularly. Wait until you see what she has in store for us!! Please check it out on the "Shop" page in Tina's website. Here is the link to the new page!!

All of us at Hummingbird wish Tina great success in her new venture.

National Coffee Day

Even though you may enjoy drinking coffee the same way every day, National Coffee Day is a day to celebrate all the ways and reasons why we enjoy this iconic beverage so much.

Although I've become more of a tea drinker in the last ten years, I'm still seduced by the aroma of coffee. It percolates my senses. The smell of brewed espresso immediately takes me back to my time as a student in Florence, Italy where I had my very first cappuccino. There was nothing like it! The vibe of the neighborhood coffee bar, the way the warm bone-china cup felt in my hand and the first sniff and sip of coffee I tasted through the swirled froth…ah... it was like no other coffee I had ever had.  And of course, the small powdered bombolone I ate along with it filled with light crème converted me then and there. So today on National Coffee Day, I plan on meeting some friends and sharing a cappuccino at a new coffee spot we recently discovered downtown. I heard they had great pumpkin crumb muffins!
