It's a Wrap. Most Noteworthy Statements of 2018.

Most Noteworthy Statements, 2018.

Hummingbird asked Lynda Bernard, our very own quotes curator, to source the most noteworthy statements made in 2018. Our criteria for “noteworthy” include that when we look back, the statement and speaker helped define the year. The list is not all-inclusive, and admittedly, although researched, is subjective — and we limited the number to ten.

From that perspective, here they are placed in order of significance, with number one, being number one! Credits and thanks to Fred Shapiro, editor of the Yale Book of Quotations, for his 2018 list, which was a great place to start looking.

  1. “Truth isn’t truth.” Rudy Giuliani

  2. “Our country is led by those who will lie about anything, backed by those who will believe anything, based on information from media sources that will say anything.” James Comey

  3. “My views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues. We must do everything possible to advance an international order that is most conducive to our security, prosperity and values, and we are strengthened in this effort by the solidarity of our alliances.

Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.” James Mattis, Former Secretary of Defense

  4. “I am an independent person, and I am no one’s pawn.” Christine Blasey Ford

  5. “We can’t knock on anybody’s doors, we have to build our own house.” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress

  6. “This is not the new normal, this is the new abnormal.” Governor Jerry Brown, regarding the wildfire that destroyed the town of Paradise and killed at least 85 people in November 2018

  7. “We gather to mourn the passing of American greatness, the real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those that live lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served.” Meghan McCain, in her eulogy for her father, Senator John McCain

  8. “I have just signed your death warrant.” Judge Rosemarie Aquilina to Larry Nassar, former USA Gymnastics doctor, during sentencing for sexual assault

  9. “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.” Sanofi, after RoseAnn Barr blamed one of its products, Ambien, for her sending a racist tweet

  10. “In the past the ball would have the same pattern every year. But six years ago we decided to introduce themes. We wanted to give people a simple message that they could think about for just one day or one hour.

In 2014, the first year, the theme was imagination. Then it was fortitude, wonder, kindness, and serenity. For 2019 the theme is harmony. Of course it’s a marketing message, but I try to personalize it. I’ve been thinking about what it means to my work/life balance and to my wife and kids.” Tom Brennan, the master artisan in charge of the most famous crystal ball in the world, Times Square.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Everyone. We thought you needed to know…harmony.
