A couple of weeks ago, we met our friends at a relatively new French bistro in Greenport, Demarchelier. Our friends had been there once before and thought we would all enjoy it. Although Demarchelier has seating outside on their front porch and we do love eating outside, it was a hot and humid night, and we opted for inside seating, with a/c.
We had a great time, and delicious food!!
The ambiance was perfect. We spent the better part of a summer in Paris some years ago, and it couldn't have been more reminiscent. Everyone spoke French, the waitstaff and owner, and also English with delightful French accents. Service was attentive and cordial. The food was delicious with portions that were ample, and prices we considered moderate.
Between the 4 of us, for appetizers & salads we sampled artichoke hearts with warm goat cheese, a salad with endive, apples, and roquefort cheese, and pisaladiere--thin crust pizza from the South of France with carmelized onions, anchovies, and olives.
Our main dishes included the roasted half chicken with morel sauce and gratin dauphinois, osso bucco with risotto, a classic salad Nicoise, and polenta cakes with mushrooms and truffle oil (this was actually a side but was perfect for a small plate). I could describe each dish in detail, but suffice it to say that consensus was all would order what they had again, and my mouth is watering right now as I prepare this review. I would go back in a heartbeat. One dinner guest said it was the "best roast chicken" he ever had. High praise indeed. He said that the skin was crispy while the inside was juicy—all parts. The osso bucco with risotto also received an ultra rave review.
We had a delightful Sancerre as well as cocktails from the bar. We didn’t sample desserts, but we plan to when we return.
Our table mates lean hard toward "foodie," and we all agreed to meet there again. It was charming and felt like a special night out, that included a visit with the owner Emily Demarchelier, which we also enjoyed.
Demarchelier is definitely recommended. We have sent friends there already. Be sure to try it!
