Just Folks. Groovy Vintage Holiday.

Groovy Vintage Holiday

If you grew up in the 1970s, chances are that the family car was likely a station wagon. Ours was and we out-lived two of them. In 1971 we had an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser which my sibs and I dubbed as “the bronze bullet.” The car’s two-toned bronzy-gold body sparked its name. I remember that it had manual windows and the interior felt huge and roomy. Recently, I found a family polaroid that was taken in the early 70s while we were on a family ski trip to PA. The snow was on the ground while the luggage was strapped to the roof of our trusty bronze bullet. We hauled everything around in that car including dogs, family, and our Christmas tree. This memory ignited the inspiration for my sketch.

In 1974, our second Vista Cruiser was white with fashionable wood panel siding. It had a third seat which we called “the way back.” This car came with an eight-track tape player and electric windows…it felt very luxurious at the time and we were fortunate.

With my Dad’s health now in decline, I’m glad that he and I had the chance over the summer to reminisce about other high points during those years.

One of them was picking out our family Christmas tree. For several years, we’d take “the Bullet,” along with our collie, MacTavish, to the local nursery during the early Fall and tag the tree we wanted only to have to wait until Christmas Eve to receive it. The wait felt like an eternity. Back then my parents always insisted on getting the tree with the root ball so that we could plant it in the backyard right after New Year’s Day. We’d only keep it indoors for 1 week in order to increase the tree’s chance to prosper and grow outdoors. We lost a couple trees, but most of them did live and thrive after all. This card reflects the importance of good foundations and the family ties that shape us.
