More September. Mallomars.

More September. Mallomars.

Mallomars.

Another thing about September... Mallomars. You know. Those cookies made by Nabisco with the graham cracker bottom, then marshmallow with that rounded top, all covered with dark (NOT MILK) chocolate? Ring a bell?

Mallomars were my brother Jeff's favorite cookie, not just when we were little, but all his life. He would always get pretty pumped when the Mallomars made their entrance to 110 Ronnie Drive, way back then. Personally, I could take them or leave them, kind of like smores--sorry all you campfire lovers.

I think Jeff was a little put off by my disinterest, and as the ultimate selling point, he told me just so I would know--big brother to little sister--"You know Sandy, we don't have Mallomars in the summer."

Truthfully I had never even noticed. He continued, "They are the only cookie you buy in the supermarket that we have to wait for the cool weather for..."

Wait for it. "... so the chocolate won't melt. That's one reason that they're so special." "Oh," I said, really not that impressed, but OK.

Of course, that might have been the spark of my interest in marketing (or not!), kind of like the bottled water phenomenon I researched as the segment evolved. Although there was undoubtedly refrigeration in trucks, and air conditioning in stores, Nabisco kept with the "tradition" that started back in 1913 when the cookie was created. And then for an entire century, children and adults alike, built up the demand for Mallomars that come September, exploded--supermarkets couldn't keep them on the shelves! I think that's marketing, no?

But going full circle, truth be told, when I walk into the grocery store and see the "stands" of Mallomars looking like a celebration in the aisle, I get enveloped in an overload of that September feeling. I don't even give a thought to the marketing genius that keeps them there, I only remember Jeff, the greatest Mallomar lover of them all.

Hats off to my sister-in-law Renee, who comes in second place on the Mallomar lovers list.
