TELLING IT LIKE IT WAS

TELLING IT LIKE IT WAS

Recently, I gave my daughter this diamond and sapphire ring I had,
what they used to call a cocktail ring.
Very splashy. Designed to be noticed.
My mother gave it to me at a family party,
taking it off her finger, and saying here,
it’s the only thing you’ll be getting from me.
So gracious. And it turned out to be true.
She gave everything to my sister.

I found it the other day,
under some tee shirts, as I was (and still am) organizing.
There it was, in it’s velvet box, never worn, never wanted.
My daughter can have it broken up into earrings,
for herself and for my granddaughter,
and who knows what else.

I want no part of it.
That’s independence.
