Photo Essay -- A Walk Around the Neighborhood

I am still learning about Brooklyn--and there is so much to take in!  One of my favorite things to do is to set out for an errand, or in one direction or another, and just walk.  I find that I am able to explore different neighborhoods and get a feel for the differences between them.  In mid-August, I had an appointment in the City on Monday afternoon, so I drove into Brooklyn Heights on Sunday and did two walking "tours."  It was a hot, sunny day.  In this first one, I focused on my own neighborhood in Brooklyn Heights.  I covered the area from the Promenade above the East River down to Cobble Hill (Atlantic Avenue is the dividing line), across (east) to Clinton Street, up to Montague, west on Montague to Columbia Heights and back up to north Brooklyn Heights, just below the "Fruit Streets" (Really called that!  Pineapple, Orange, Cranberry, south to north.)  I also wandered around a little in the Hicks, Joralemon area.  I will point that out below. Lady Liberty

Stepping out onto the Promenade is always a treat.  Seeing the Statue of Liberty off in the distance and all of the activity of the Harbor is thrilling.  Construction--always, plus tour boats, sail boats, barges.  It never gets old.

NYC Skyline

There is a lot to take in as you look northwest across the East River.  The skyline is anchored by the Freedom Tower, and the view north by the Brooklyn Bridge.  Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the recreation areas out on the piers are in the foreground.

The Promenade

Looking south on the Promenade, you get a glimpse of the activity on an early Sunday afternoon.  The large building on the right is One Brooklyn.  It is at the end of Brooklyn Bridge Park, on the other side of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (the notorious BQE), which is beneath the Promenade.

More Promenade

You can see that there are fewer people at the northern end of the Promenade.  Note the Brooklyn Bridge and the new Pier House jutting out on the right, and then the Manhattan Bridge just north of that.

Columbia Heights

I have walked on many of the Brooklyn Heights streets, and I might be partial, but I do think the brownstones on Columbia Heights have the most beautiful window boxes.  Also, the facades of the brownstones are lovely.

Check these out-- just getting new blooms, and also notice the stonework on the front of the windows, and in the doorway.

River Deli

Featured above, the River Deli is a super restaurant-- not a deli at all.  This is the area where I was wandering around off Joralemon. If I had to name this photo it would be tongue in cheek, "Nothing is happening."  This is such a typical Brooklyn Heights scene.

Community Garden

This community garden is just so beautiful.  I believe it is on Joralemon as it loops around down near Atlantic Avenue, but I'm not 100% sure--it might be on a street that runs parallel in close proximity.  I do know that this peaceful oasis is on the east side of the wall in the back, and that the BQE is on the other side; talk about juxtaposition!

Brooklyn Attitude

If you have lived in any of the Boroughs, you will get a chuckle from this photo.  Note the official sign posted on the fence;  and the effrontery.

Willow Place

Willow Place is one of those quaint streets you find in Brooklyn Heights.  Look at these homes!  This was part of my "off Joralemon" wandering.

Alley

This is an alley off Hicks.  Note the lovely architecture and detail.

Heights Chateau

The Heights Chateau was noted as the best wine store in Brooklyn Heights. I am looking forward to exploring new to me wines here. Heights Chateau is on the north side of Atlantic Avenue just east of Henry Street.

Tripoli Lebanese Restaurant

One of the many Middle Eastern establishments on Atlantic Avenue.  Tripoli is located on the southeast corner of Atlantic and Clinton.  I am looking forward to trying it!

St. Ann's

St. Ann's is a landmark in Brooklyn Heights and its school is renowned for its quality education. The main building, located at Clinton and Montague is significant.  Note the sign at the bottom of the frame.  We are proud of this tradition.

Friend of a Farmer

I had been walking for quite some time, and I felt in need of a libation. Arriving well after lunch and before the dinner hour, I had the bar area to myself.  They concocted a special, refreshing cocktail for me to enjoy while I checked out my photos on the Canon. Note the special ingredients I chose from.  I liked the "leave the rest to us" part.

Potatoes in a Bowl

Natural ingredients are featured everywhere at Friend of a Farmer, including as decor.  While the fire wasn't going on this hot August afternoon, I have enjoyed waiting for our table or having a glass of wine at other times of year in this comfortable seating area off the bar.  The fire was roaring, and the jazz was playing loud.  I think they like Mark O'Connor there!

Neighborhood Staple

Always parked just outside the Pierrepont Playground at the corner of Pierrepont and Columbia Heights.  I'm almost home, but I didn't stop for ice cream.  Although I wanted to.
