RBG

I have been mildly amused by the cult following of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG). The super hero, action figure representations of our 85 year old, usually stone-faced and non-animated SCJ, are… well… funny! But, what is really cool about all of this notoriety and relatively newly found fame and admiration is that RBG is wicked-smart!!

What many of us possibly were previously unaware of is the extent to which RBG has championed women’s rights—no make that human rights. Her effect on U.S. law with respect to discrimination, and especially discrimination against women, is of a magnitude that truly is super-hero worthy. In the movie, we learn about the discrimination that RBG herself faced when after graduating at the top of her class from Columbia Law School, not one firm in NYC would hire her (a woman). We learn what it took for her to get to that point, and how she used the constitution and the law to change minds, to change positions, to make changes to the law by arguing cases that were truly game changing in the realm of anti-discrimination.

I expected to learn a lot from this documentary, and I did. I heard it was very good, and it was. What I didn’t expect though was to learn as much as I did about RBG herself— her love of the law, her husband who was her staunch supporter and the love of her life, her children and grandchildren, friends and ex classmates and colleagues. Ex presidents and senators. Through their eyes, I began to see the incredible person RBG is, and heck, I’d wear one of those Notorious RBG t-shirts! She totally rocks, and is a cult icon for all the right reasons. I highly recommend this movie. It was an extremely enjoyable 90+ minutes, and I didn’t want it to end.
