The Weight of Jake’s Letter. Episode 5.

Willie read Jake’s letter over several times before he folded it, put it back in the envelope, glanced at the return address again, and stuffed it in his shirt pocket. Continuing with the fence, Willie’s head was spinning. Jake was his whole world and now Sue made it clear Willie ought not write or visit. Not sure what to do, or if there was anything to do, he lost himself in the farm work the rest of the day.

When evening came and chores were done, he walked through the fields to Jacob’s and Betty Lou’s where he would have supper and do some sitting. Just like he had done every evening since his family had been gone. He brought Jake’s letter to show them after supper when they were doing their porch sitting.

Rural Kansas was showing off that night. A light warm breeze rustled the trees and seemed to usher in the sunset. Still warm despite summer quickly fading into autumn, the night sounds of crickets and cicadas chimed on. The sun still set amid yellows and oranges and reds and purples despite the shorter days.

“The prettiest evenings I’ve ever seen are right here. Right here in our little part of this big world.” Jacob smiled and looked at Betty Lou and Willie together there with him. “And the people I love most right here with me.”

Betty Lou answered, “Oh Jacob, it is such a pretty evening. Can’t help but think back to all the times we’ve spent here in this dusty town, good and bad, over the years, talking about things, thinking about things, and just living. And the special times we all have spent together porch sittin’.”

After a little while, as the blue had just about all but disappeared from the sky, Willie spoke up. “I am so grateful for you both. You have stood beside me my whole life. Your love and guidance have been essential to me and I just want you to know how much I love and appreciate you both.”

Jacob and Betty Lou looked at Willie and smiled. Then Jacob said, “You will never know how much you mean to us and how much we appreciate and love you.”

Willie asked then, “Can the three of us go for a little walk, just down the path a bit, before it gets dark. Got something I want to show you.”

Willie finished reading Jake’s letter to Jacob and Betty Lou just as the twilight gave way to the beginning of night. They walked back to the porch in silence, listening to the night sounds peacefully closing in around them.
