Hummingbirds in Sag Harbor. Really.

I know many of you have read about how the hummingbird became our blog's symbol... somehow pertaining to nearly everything. Here's a bit of a ramble story about what happened this year with the hummingbirds on our deck. Yes! We have hummingbirds here in Sag Harbor every year! And we don't even have a yard-- just garden boxes on our deck! Each year, when they come, it feels like a miracle.

In May I saw the hummingbird come to my flower pots
late afternoon, some plantings were new.
I was excited. It was early for them to arrive.
Then crickets. Nada.
For weeks.

I didn't plant enough for them
I thought. The flowers were not bright enough,
not fragrant enough. Not enough for them to feel my invitation.

Then, the rush of excitement
Two weeks ago. Watching mesmerized.
I knew they would come, though truth be told, even I
was giving up.
Not one but two came.
There were histrionics.
The pair were comical.
And brought big smiles.

I cut the flowers back.
Forcing another bloom.
Be patient, I told myself.
It is their clock, not mine.
Now every day, I see one.
A female. She comes sometime near dusk.
And then yesterday, in the late morning too.
And today, three times. She stays around longer.

Please don't leave.
Before summer leaves us.
And this tiny creature readies
herself for her long flight south.
Did you know they fly solo?
And then come back to their same
nesting place. Impressive
on so many levels. No GPS.
And all.

“For many, seeing a hummingbird is considered a sign of good luck. It’s believed that these birds bring positive energy, encouraging those who see them to stay positive and focused on their goals. In some cultures, a hummingbird appearing is thought to be a blessing, representing love and harmony entering your life. On the other hand, some believe that a hummingbird visiting you could signal a need for change, urging you to examine areas of your life that might need improvement.” Centre of Excellence

See what I mean? I think they are a messenger from someone you are yearning to see and speak with again. Sandra Novick
