National Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie Day!
So....this Saturday, June 9th is considered National Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie Day! Who knew? Long Island's strawberry season will soon be upon us which inspired me to create a whimsical recipe to entice our readers.
When my siblings and I were young, my Grandfather Ed Sahlin introduced us to the bountiful world of "Pick Your Own Produce" and took us strawberry picking on the North Fork. At the end, we'd hand in our quart containers with red-stained hands and mouths and we were charged accordingly. This became a tradition. My Grandmother, Eva Sahlin would sometimes make us a fruit pie that we'd eat together after school during the coming week. I also remember that my Grandparents would preserve a lot of their own garden grown harvest, which left a nostalgic impression with me as an adult. I still look forward to eating and preserving these two local Spring fruits together, especially when I make my own Rhu-Berry Orange jam. It's one way of preserving the memories. Happy Picking!
