Okay, I think we can all agree that Valentine’s Day has turned into a pretty hokey holiday. Despite its history dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries (religious), then its “love” connection cited as early as Chaucer, to today, with celebrations on varying romantic themes, and banning of the same, around the world, what does Valentine’s Day really signify? Here in the U.S. my superficial, not that cynical “read” includes a sea of pink, red, hearts, frills, luxe items, chocolate, red wine and champagne….and love if it suits you. Growing up here, I also recall seeing friends experience extreme joy, excitement, angst, hurt and exclusion on this special day devoted to “love.”
Valentine’s Day sparked a discussion amongst Hummingbird contributors. Given our mission, we wanted to find the best of Valentine’s Day and share it. So today, we have a little something special for everyone—a celebration of love in the world. Whether it be love and respect, devotion, art, humor—we invite you to find something to make you smile this February 14th. Love just might be in the air--but regardless, to all--Happy Valentine’s Day!
